Giving the bees a new home

This was last August after the tree blew over that the bees were in. Knowing that there was little chance for their winter survival we put them into brood boxes and moved them to the farm.

We cut 12" sections apart on the log.  The bees were about 4 foot deep into the tree.
This was a very tedious task to gently remove most of the comb and not injure too many bees.
We left the hive body there for the night so that any foraging bees would return and find their queen safely in the hive.

  1. How cool! So did these bees make it through the winter?

  2. Unfortunately they did not make it thru winter. I knew it was a risky move, but felt like they had a better chance of survival rather than being exposed thru winter. I think maybe next time I will combine them with another hive if it is that late in the year.
